This week we saw the cross country runners back in action. Following some great performances at the recent Set Cross Country, six runners were selected to compete in each of the age group categories. This included some new members, including Abi B, George C, Genevieve and Tabitha.
The Copthill Cross Country is a great course, including some undulations, a steep incline and a whole load of spectators including llamas, pigs and sheep! For the U11s it is a particularly tough two lap course - especially for the Year 5 competitors.
With a large field of runners in each age group, every race was extremely competitive with a very fast start over the first 100m! All our pupils worked hard and it was great to see them finishing strong. Top ten performances came from Faith S (8th), Beau B-W (5th), Charlotte J (2nd) and Rory P (8th - and a year young). Both Charlotte and Beau received medals for finishing top six.
It was a super team effort by the U11 Girls and Boys who were both placed in the team competition. A fabulous team win for the U11 Girls and a creditable third place for the U11 Boys. We did miss Harriet this week in the U9 girls team, who was unfortunately suffering from illness.
As a school, we were delighted to finish in second place overall which takes into account every team's score. A tremendous effort in a large field of schools! #teamsthughs

On Wednesday, St Hugh’s took four teams of runners to Copthill School, near Stamford, for their annual cross country event. The sun was shining and lots of parents came to watch and support the runners.
First to run was the Under 9 Girls’ Team who were missing Harriet due to sickness. It was the first ‘away’ cross country for some of the runners and the course involved hills, forest and running past a wooden fort!
There were runners from ten other schools, so the course was busy. The Under 9 Girls finished 6th overall after some strong running!
The Under 9 Boys race saw Beau take a medal for 5th place, the boys finishing 5th overall.
Next up was the Under 11 races, over a longer course, described as ‘hard and hilly’. For the girls, Charlotte made a sprint start to settle into the run behind an extremely fast contender from Leicester. There was incredible effort from every member of the Under 11 Girls' Team – they each flew over the line to hugs from their teammates and a well deserved cookie – the team finished first overall!
Finishing the event was the under 11 boys race. Rory P led the St Hugh’s team over the tough course but the competition was strong – despite no medals for the top six runners, St Hugh’s finished 3rd overall – a mega team effort – well done everyone! Mrs Felton told us the next day that we had finished in an incredible 2nd PLACE overall from 11 schools!
