Result: Plate Final - L

St Hugh’s opened its Rugby 7’s account with a trip to Leicester Grammar School for their Invitational 7s Festival. There were ten strong rugby playing schools in attendance from all over the country so we knew that this would be a great learning experience for the St Hugh’s boys. They approached the event excited, but with some nerves as this was something new for the majority of them. We started our pool playing Lutterworth High, this was a tough start to the afternoon but the boys took a lot away from the game. Unfortunately, this was the first and last game for Toby having to step out due to an injury. Our next game in the pool saw us play our hosts Leicester Grammar, another challenge but the boys tackled and defended the best I have seen them play, working hard for each other. The third pool game we met Stockport who made us work very hard in defence moving the ball around the pitch. We started to fatigue and gaps began to appear in our strong defence. The final game was against Princethorpe and the boys came out strong, you would not have thought they had already played three games of rugby! We struggled to finish with points on the board but again our tackling and effort was immense. So much so that this was applauded by our opposition. We found ourselves in the plate final against Welland Park - there were some very tired legs out there for both teams. Welland Park started strong scoring a few well worked tries. The second half however, St Hugh’s fought back with some great tries of their own from Aydin and Will C. Unfortunately, it was not quite enough to take the plate. A great experience for all our players and the character they demonstrated was commendable. Well done boys, amazing effort.
