Match Report

Result: 30 - 15 (6 - 3 tries) W

This week we welcomed Witham Hall to the hallowed turf of St Hugh’s. The St Hugh’s boys approached the game cautiously as Witham Hall's reputation as a tough outfit preceded them. St Hugh’s lost the toss and were given the kick off by the opposition. With the ball in hand Witham Hall looked dangerous and they moved the ball around the pitch well. It was not too long until gaps appeared in St Hugh’s defence and the first scores went to Witham Hall. St Hugh’s struggled to find their flow and were unable to get any go forward ball. Handling errors meant quite a lot of scrummaging and turnover balls. Witham Hall were again able to capitalise through some strong running and picked up another two tries. Thankfully just before half-time Toby found some space and got over the white wash to give St Hugh’s some points on the board as we broke for half-time. The second half brought with it a more determined and confident St Hugh’s team. There were still the handling errors by both teams, but St Hugh’s dominated the scrums which gave them plenty of possession. With some good carries and great offloading keeping the ball alive St Hugh’s ran in the first score of the second half. This seemed to give the St Hugh’s players the belief they needed and the tries continued to come through - Rupert, Toby again and Sam. The effort and rugby displayed by the St Hugh’s boys was phenomenal and they continued to apply the pressure all the way till the final whistle. Well done to all the players involved, a real team effort and a performance to be thoroughly proud of. Thank you.
